The Philippines faces an enormous problem in housing its citizens, with 44% of the national population living in slums. Over 94 million people live in the Philippines, almost one third live in poverty and most live in densely populated slum areas all over the country. The number of people who live in slums increases by 3.5% per year, subsisting in shelters that are only 5 -10 square metres small and constructed of flimsy materials. In 2013 the most powerful cyclone to make landfall in recorded history, Haiyan, struck the Philippines, destroyed 90% of the south eastern city of Tacloban and left one million people homeless. In meetings with the Mayor of Tacloban as well as Vice President Jejomar Binay, plans were developed to deploy the NevHouse solution to address the acute housing problem.
